The best AI assistant for Mac in 2026 is, for most users, the ChatGPT desktop app combined with Apple Intelligence. ChatGPT handles the heavy lifting; Apple Intelligence — now with the rebuilt Siri in macOS 27 — handles system-level writing, search and actions. Raycast AI wins for keyboard-driven power users; Claude wins for long-document work; DeskFerry Assist, our personal AI assistant, wins for real action across business apps.
Compared using each vendor's documentation, pricing pages, download pages and published capabilities. Prices are in USD as of September 2026.
How We Compared
We compared each assistant on five common tasks on macOS (Sequoia and later, including macOS 27):
- Draft an email in Mail or any text field — speed and quality
- Summarize a long PDF opened in Preview
- Multi-step research with web browsing
- Screen capture → analyze ("what does this error mean?")
- Voice query hands-free while in another app
Our rating rubric (5 dimensions × 2; the scores below are our editorial rating, not test measurements): action breadth, desktop integration, free-tier generosity, voice quality, privacy.
The Best AI Assistants for Mac (Ranked)
1. ChatGPT for macOS — 9/10
Price: Free; Go $8/mo; Plus $20/mo; Pro from $100/mo (ChatGPT pricing) Mac strengths: Option-Space global shortcut and a companion window that stays in front. Menu bar icon. Voice mode. Screenshot input. Work with Apps reads context from Xcode, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Terminal, Notes and more. Built into Siri and Writing Tools via Apple Intelligence. Best for: General assistance, drafting, multi-modal queries, voice Where it falls short: Work with Apps covers a set list of apps, and it acts in business tools only through its connectors. Get it: Mac download
ChatGPT's macOS app is the strongest general desktop AI experience on Mac. The Option-Space shortcut is the killer feature — instant AI from anywhere, no app switching. Work with Apps lets ChatGPT read context from supported apps without you copy-pasting.
2. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI — 8/10
Price: Free on Macs with Apple silicon; Apple says some server-based features have daily limits (Apple) Mac strengths: Writing Tools and proofreading system-wide. Smart Reply in Mail and Messages. On macOS 27, Siri AI answers in Spotlight, draws on your mail, messages and files, and takes actions across apps; Visual Intelligence can read a selected window. ChatGPT available inside Siri and Writing Tools. Best for: System-level convenience, your own files and messages, on-device privacy Where it falls short: Siri AI is in beta, English-first, not initially in the EU, and doesn't reach business tools like a CRM.
Apple Intelligence on Mac is the same idea as on iPhone, and macOS 27 made it much more than a feature layer. Writing Tools work in every text field; Siri now lives in Spotlight, so "find the contract Dana sent last week and summarize the payment terms" happens where you already search.
3. Raycast AI — 8/10
Price: Pro $10/mo (fast models, 500 AI credits); Pro Plus $20/mo adds advanced models; about 20% off billed annually (Raycast pricing) Mac strengths: Lives inside Raycast (the macOS launcher). Keyboard-first. Quick AI, AI Chat and AI Commands chained with other Raycast actions. Multi-model, with a bring-your-own-key option. Best for: Keyboard-driven power users, devs, people who already live in Raycast Where it falls short: Mac-first and credit-metered; the free plan has no AI. Get it: raycast.com
For users whose Mac workflow is keyboard-first, Raycast AI is unmatched. It's not a standalone assistant — it's AI inside a launcher you already use, which makes the friction effectively zero.
4. Claude Desktop — 7/10
Price: Free; Pro $20/mo ($17/mo billed annually); Max from $100/mo (Claude pricing) Mac strengths: Long context and careful writing. Quick entry: double-tap Option to open Claude from any app, Caps Lock to dictate. Voice mode. MCP support for connecting custom tools. Gmail, Calendar and Drive connectors with approval. Best for: Long documents, technical reading, writing-heavy work Where it falls short: Fewer system hooks than ChatGPT's Work with Apps; connectors beyond Google need a paid plan. Get it: Mac download
Claude's Mac app is the cleanest writing assistant on the platform. Drop in a long PDF and have a real conversation about it without context loss.
5. Perplexity Comet — 8/10
Price: Free; Pro $20/mo; Max $200/mo (Perplexity pricing) Mac strengths: AI-first browser that doubles as an assistant — free since March 2026. Citation-grounded research. A sidecar assistant that reads the current page and handles multi-step web tasks. Voice mode. Best for: Research, browsing, fact-finding Where it falls short: You have to switch browsers to get the most from it. Get it: Comet
Comet is Perplexity's AI browser — a different product category from the standard assistant apps. If most of your AI usage is research and browsing, it's worth a serious look.
6. Microsoft Copilot — 6/10
Price: Free; Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99/mo; Premium $19.99/mo, which replaced Copilot Pro (Microsoft plans) Mac strengths: Native Mac app with an Option-Space shortcut. Voice mode. Microsoft 365 integration (Outlook, Word, Excel for Mac users). Best for: Microsoft 365 users on Mac Get it: Get Copilot
7. Gemini for Mac — 6/10
Price: Free; Google AI Pro $19.99/mo (Google AI plans) Mac strengths: Native Mac app since April 2026 (macOS 15+, Apple silicon) with an Option-Space shortcut. Google Workspace integration. Multi-modal. Best for: Heavy Workspace users Where it falls short: Its action value is mostly inside Google's own apps. Get it: gemini.google/mac
Gemini used to be browser-only on Mac. The native app closes most of that gap — it's now a real option if your work lives in Gmail, Docs and Drive.
8. DeskFerry Assist (Web) — 8/10 for action
Price: Growth $49/mo, Pro $99/mo, Scale $299/mo; 7-day free trial (DeskFerry pricing) Mac strengths: Real cross-app action — calendar, CRM, email, 1,500+ integrations. Runs in the browser, and through the DeskFerry Slack app. Best for: Real virtual-assistant work that crosses business apps Where it falls short: No native Mac app, no menu bar or global shortcut, no voice mode.
DeskFerry Assist on Mac runs in the browser (web app), and through the DeskFerry Slack app: connect your agents to a Slack channel and run them from there — @mention an agent in a channel or DM it to kick off a task, and approve its actions without leaving Slack. It's the only option on this list built to take multi-step action across the long tail of work apps — schedule the meeting, update the CRM, draft the follow-up — and to run those tasks on a schedule.
How to Set Up an AI Assistant on Mac
- Install the app from its download page (or the Mac App Store where offered) and sign in.
- Pick one primary shortcut. ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot all default to Option-Space — change the others in each app's settings. Claude uses a double-tap of Option.
- Grant permissions when asked: Accessibility for quick entry and Work with Apps, Screen Recording for screenshot input, Microphone for voice.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence in System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri, and choose whether Siri can hand requests to ChatGPT.
- Keep it in the menu bar and enable "Open at login" so the shortcut always works.
- Connect accounts (Gmail, Calendar, Drive) in the app so it can act, not just answer.
The Mac-Specific Stack That Works
A pattern we recommend for most Mac knowledge workers:
- Apple Intelligence — turn it on; let it handle Writing Tools and Siri across apps
- ChatGPT desktop app — Option-Space for instant access; primary general assistant
- Raycast AI ($10/mo, if you use Raycast) — AI in your launcher for keyboard-first workflows
- Claude or Perplexity — pick the one that matches your dominant non-general use case
- DeskFerry Assist — when you need actual cross-app action across CRM, calendar, email
This stack covers system-level convenience, general AI, power-user ergonomics, and real cross-app work — for roughly $50/month across the first four if you're paying for all of them, plus DeskFerry from $49/month.
Privacy on Mac
Apple Intelligence processes most requests on-device, with Private Cloud Compute for the heavier ones. Requests you send to ChatGPT from Siri or Writing Tools go to OpenAI, and macOS asks before sending them by default. Third-party assistants follow their own data-handling policies — paid tiers across ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity have stronger commitments than free tiers.
