Last Updated: September 28, 2026.
The best AI assistant for iPhone in 2026 depends on what you're trying to do. ChatGPT wins for general assistance (voice mode, image input, broad capability). Apple Intelligence — now with the rebuilt Siri AI in iOS 27 — is the best for your own messages, photos and apps. Perplexity wins for research; Claude wins for long-document work; DeskFerry Assist, our personal AI assistant (via Safari or Slack), wins for real action across your work apps.
We compared eight assistants on the same five iPhone use cases and the same editorial rubric, based on each vendor's documentation, pricing pages, App Store listings and published capabilities. Prices are in USD as of September 2026.
How We Compared
Five iPhone use cases we compared each tool on:
- Draft a 200-word email from a one-line spec (voice or text input)
- Summarize a saved Safari article (~3,000 words)
- Answer a multi-step research question with web browsing
- Schedule a meeting (or fail to — most can't)
- Hands-free voice query while walking — accuracy and latency
Our rating (an editorial score, not a lab measurement — 5 dimensions, 2 points each, 10 max): action breadth, voice quality, free-tier generosity, integration with iOS, privacy and on-device handling.
The Best AI Assistants for iPhone (Ranked)
1. ChatGPT — 9/10
Price: Free; Go $8/mo; Plus $20/mo; Pro from $100/mo (ChatGPT pricing) iPhone strengths: Excellent voice mode. Image and file input. Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets, Action Button and Siri shortcuts. Built into Siri and Writing Tools through Apple Intelligence. Connectors for Gmail, Calendar, Outlook and more. Free plan runs GPT-5.6 Luna with unlimited text chats since August 2026. Best for: General assistance, drafting, research, voice queries Where it falls short: It can't touch iPhone system settings or your Messages and Photos the way Siri can. Get it: App Store
ChatGPT is the iPhone AI assistant most people should default to. The voice mode is natural — interruptible and able to handle multi-turn conversation. Map it to the Action Button and it's one press away; in iOS 27's Siri app you can also hand a question to ChatGPT without leaving Siri.
2. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI — 8/10
Price: Free on iPhone 15 Pro and newer; Apple says some server-based features have daily limits, with expanded access to be offered for a fee later (Apple) iPhone strengths: On-device privacy with Private Cloud Compute for heavier requests. Siri AI (iOS 27, beta) holds real conversations, understands on-screen and personal context, and acts across apps. Writing Tools in every text field. Notification summaries. Photo Cleanup. Shortcuts you can create by describing them. Best for: Your own messages, mail, photos and device control; privacy-sensitive tasks Where it falls short: Beta, English-only at launch (French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish to follow), not initially available in the EU, and it doesn't reach business tools like a CRM.
The iOS 27 release on September 14, 2026 changed this entry. Apple Intelligence used to be a feature layer; with Siri AI it's a real assistant with its own app and conversation history synced across devices. It still won't replace a dedicated chat app for open-ended work, but for "find the message where Priya sent the address and add it to Friday's event," nothing else on iPhone gets as close.
3. Perplexity — 8/10
Price: Free; Pro $20/mo; Max $200/mo (Perplexity pricing) iPhone strengths: Source citations on every answer. Voice mode with web browsing. Widgets and Action Button support. The free Comet browser (on iOS since March 2026) adds an assistant that works across web pages. Best for: Research, fact-finding, "what's the latest on..." questions Where it falls short: Not a personal assistant — it doesn't manage your calendar or inbox. Get it: App Store
If your iPhone use of AI is mostly "answer this question with up-to-date info," Perplexity is better than ChatGPT for the citation discipline.
4. Claude — 7/10
Price: Free; Pro $20/mo ($17/mo billed annually); Max from $100/mo (Claude pricing) iPhone strengths: Long-document work and careful writing. Voice mode on every plan. "Ask Claude" Siri and Spotlight intent, Shortcuts actions, a Home Screen widget and an "Analyze Photo with Claude" control. Gmail, Google Calendar and Drive connectors that act with your approval. Best for: Long-document analysis, technical reading, structured writing Where it falls short: Its actions are Google-first; connectors beyond Google need a paid plan. Get it: App Store
Claude is the strongest writing partner on iPhone. Paste a long PDF or article and ask follow-up questions without it losing the beginning — and with the Siri intent you can start a chat without opening the app.
5. Gemini — 6/10
Price: Free; Google AI Pro $19.99/mo (Google AI plans) iPhone strengths: Gmail, Calendar and Docs integration. Multi-modal input. Gemini Live. Lock Screen widgets. Best for: Google Workspace users Where it falls short: On iPhone it can't act at the system level the way it does on Android. Get it: App Store
Gemini's iPhone experience is good if you live in Google Workspace. Outside that, it's a step behind ChatGPT and Claude on iPhone.
6. DeepSeek — 6/10
Price: Free iPhone strengths: Generous free chat. Strong reasoning on the V4 models. Best for: Heavy users on a budget; reasoning-heavy tasks Where it falls short: Few iOS-level extras, and its privacy policy says data is stored on servers in China. Get it: App Store
7. Microsoft Copilot — 5/10
Price: Free; Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99/mo; Premium $19.99/mo, which replaced Copilot Pro (Microsoft plans) iPhone strengths: Voice mode. Microsoft 365 integration (Outlook, Word, Excel). Best for: Microsoft 365 users Get it: App Store
Copilot's iPhone app is solid but undifferentiated from ChatGPT unless you're a Microsoft 365 subscriber.
8. DeskFerry Assist (via Safari) — 8/10 for action
Price: Growth $49/mo, Pro $99/mo, Scale $299/mo; 7-day free trial (DeskFerry pricing) iPhone strengths: Real cross-app action — calendar, CRM, email, 1,500+ integrations. DeskFerry runs in the browser (web app), and through the DeskFerry Slack app — so you can also reach it from Slack on your iPhone. Best for: Real virtual-assistant work — "schedule a 30-min with their CTO next week, update the deal in HubSpot, and follow up if they don't reply by Friday" Where it falls short: No native iPhone app, no Siri or Shortcuts integration, and no voice mode.
DeskFerry Assist isn't a native iPhone app, but from Safari or Slack it does what native iPhone AI apps don't: move work forward across your business stack, and run tasks on a schedule. With the DeskFerry Slack app you can connect your agents to a Slack channel and run them from there — @mention an agent in a channel or DM it to kick off a task, and approve its actions without leaving Slack.
When to Use What on iPhone
- General Q&A and drafting → ChatGPT
- Your own messages, photos and device → Siri AI / Apple Intelligence
- Research with citations → Perplexity
- Long documents and technical reading → Claude
- Real action across your work apps (CRM, email, calendar) → DeskFerry Assist (Safari or Slack)
- Voice-first hands-free → ChatGPT or Siri
- Google Workspace → Gemini
How to Set Up an AI Assistant on iPhone
- Install the app from the App Store and sign in.
- Map the Action Button (iPhone 15 Pro and later): Settings → Action Button → Shortcut or Controls → choose the app's voice or new-chat action.
- Add widgets: long-press the Home Screen or Lock Screen → Edit → Add Widget → pick ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity.
- Turn on Siri AI if your iPhone supports it: Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri, then choose whether Siri can hand requests to ChatGPT.
- Connect accounts (Gmail, Calendar, Drive) inside the app so it can act, not just answer.
- Review privacy settings — chat history and model-training toggles live in each app's settings.
Apple Intelligence Features Worth Knowing
On iPhone 15 Pro or newer, these are the Apple Intelligence features most people miss:
- Writing Tools — rewrite, summarize, proofread, change tone in any text field across any app
- Smart Reply — proposed replies in Messages and Mail
- Notification Summary — collapses multiple notifications into a one-line summary
- Photo Cleanup — remove distracting objects from photos
- Visual Intelligence — point your camera, or select what's on screen, for context and actions
- Siri AI — conversations with follow-ups, personal context, and actions across apps (iOS 27)
Privacy Notes
Apple Intelligence handles most requests on-device, with Private Cloud Compute for the heavier ones. Requests you send to ChatGPT from Siri or Writing Tools go to OpenAI, and iOS asks before sending them by default. For sensitive workflows, prefer on-device tools or vendors with explicit data-handling commitments on paid plans.
Free-tier AI apps may use your conversations for training unless you opt out — check each app's privacy settings if you handle sensitive content.
